Waste water treatment plant with carousel activated sludge process and intermittent aeration was selected for experimental work. Low concentration of dissolved oxygen occurred because of fine bubble air diffusers deterioration. This caused low nitrification rate and nitrites creation. After aeration system refurbishment the nitrification rate gradually increased. Probes for measurement of dissolved oxygen concentration, ammonia concentration and nitrate concentration were installed to the carousel tank. After preliminary monitoring and partial nitrification stabilization a new system of intermittent aeration control was implemented. The system is a rule based control system based on setting up the process working area by concentrations of ammonia and nitrate nitrogen.
