Sludge disintegration can be one of feasible methods leading to control of excessive growth of filamentous microorganisms at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and enhance the effect of activated sludge separation from treated wastewater in secondary settling tanks. Several lab-scale tests with samples of activated sludge obtained from three various municipal WWTPs were carried out. The samples of activated sludge with a high content of filamentous bacteria with Microthrix parvicella as the dominating type were sonicated on laboratory ultrasonic disintegrator at the frequency of 20 kHz and power level 180 W. Settling experiments proved that sonication markedly reduced the sludge volume index and the reduction increased with increased duration of treatment."@en . .
