"Current research in protection of exterior historic glasses is mainly focused on organically modified silica based sol-gel derived compounds as it is believed that a proper use of organo-functional silanes can provide progress in water, chemical, abrasion and UV resistance, but also enhance adhesion of coating to glass substrates and improve flow properties of the final coating. Therefore, this work aimed at material survey of protective coatings applied to glass surfaces. The methodology was based on a sol-gel process using such hybrid sols. The starting precursor for preparing the silica matrix of the protective layer was TEOS (tetraethoxysilane, tetraethylorthosilicate), which was further modified with various functional groups. Besides that, also chosen commercial products designed for conservation-restoration practice were examined. The present work achieved to design various hybrid inorganic-organic TEOS based coatings using different quantities of functionalized silica alkoxides and different times of polycondensation. The sol-gel process proved to be an effective route for the preparation of transparent, colourless and homogenous protective coatings stable under exposure to different model ageing tests and with a good adhesion to glass substrates, thereby meeting the main requirements of building maintenance and restoration-conservation practice. Considering the obtained results, particularly the alkyl- and the methacryl-functionalized hybrid silica coatings appear to be promising for further research. On the contrary, the results of the examined commercial products seem to be unsatisfactory. However, to evaluate the potential use of hybrid inorganic-organic silica based coatings; there is still a need of wider studies of the film formation parameters of sol-gel coatings, further design, applicability and possible control of their composition and properties."@en .
