"Preparation of porous alumina ceramics by uniaxial pressing with saccharides and polysaccharides and their characterization"@en . "Mono-, di- and polysaccharides (glucose, sucrose, inulin and rice starch) were tested with respect to their performance as potentially useful pore formers (and pressing aids) for the uniaxial pressing of dry ceramic powders into disk-shaped compacts (tablets). For this purpose, mixtures of alumina powders with 10, 30 and 50 vol.% of these organic additives were uniaxially pressed at 100 MPa. The organic additives to be used as pore formers were characterized via microscopic image analysis, and the mechanical strength of the as-pressed composite tablets before firing was determined via diametrical compression tests (Brazilian tests). Powder compacts were fired at 1550 \u00B0C and their ceramic microstructure after firing (and burnout of the organic pore formers) was characterized by the Archimedes method and by mercury porosimetry. Thermal conductivity measurements were made via the laser-flash method and confirmed a decrease with increasing porosity. A microscopic study was performed to characterize the size, shape, orientation and spatial arrangement of pores as well as to reveal processing defects."@en . .
