The cathodic protection leads to an alkalization of the environment which makes a transfer of iron to passive state easier. A passivation potential decreases as pH of the environment increases. A methodology was proposed, which allows measuring the rate of a partial anodic reaction of iron at cathodic polarization. The identified areas of activity of cathodically polarized iron at pH 11, 12 and 13 were verified by measuring of the corrosion rate of steel by means of electrical resistance probes. The cathodic polarization at the protection potential -850 mV/CSE leads to unacceptable corrosion rate when the pH of the surrounding electrolyte reaches the pH up to level of 11.
