"For the excitation of electrons from the valence to the conduction band of a semiconductor photocatalyst (generation of holes in the valence band) is required radiation energy equal or greater than the energy of band gap (the difference of energy levels of conduction and valence band). For the most commonly used photocatalyst titanium dioxide in crystal form anatase, the energy band gap is 3.2 eV is therefore necessary radiation of wavelength less than 387 nm. To test the photocatalyst for visible region is the contrary to use of radiation, which contains the ultraviolet spectrum. Choosing the right type of source (intensity and range of wavelengths) radiation appears to be an essential parameter that determines the speed of the resulting photocatalytic processes on the surface of photocatalyst.
