"Art is defined be a certain detachment between the artist and the audience, be it in form of the frame around the canvas, the neutrality of the gallery space, or the complicated history of art \u2013 without which can easily lose our way. On the other hand, the artist tries to provide a certain proximity, to share his view of the world we share. Speaking about such intimacy or detachment, about proximity and distance in art creates an irresolvable tension. Icelandic art is traditionally built on such tension. Both academic studies and foreign exhibitions thus pose the simple question: What is characteristic or unique for Icelandic art? And they come up with even simpler answer: Detachment and intimacy; the country's physical distance from the European art scene is just as formative as its intimate connection with nature. Nobody, it seems, feels the need to tear down the simplicity of this interpretation. It is an attractive label and a straightforward guideline for understanding. Despite its name, this exhibition (the result of a long-term cooperative effort by Czech and Icelandic art school students), does not try to continue within these definitions, nor does it try to demythologise or deconstruct them. If these narratives of Icelandic distance and intimacy have any meaning, then they can be experienced only through re-enchantment, without any claims to generalized or aesthetic judgments. Another source of tension involved the very process of preparing this exhibition. Intense cultural exchange and forced cooperation represent an assault on the sovereignty of artistic individuality. It is an intentional incursion into the artist's intimacy, without any hope at finding one's original (natural) authenticity."@en .
