"In several European regions, Sand Martins (Riparia riparia) shifted from sand banks to artificial cavities. Here we provide the evidence that the frequency of mixed colonies of Sand Martins with other bird species was significantly higher in artificial cavities compared to colonies in sand banks. Species composition was significantly different. Notable was lack of European Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) dominance in artificial cavities, and presence mixed colonies with Eurasian Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), House Martin (Delichon urbicum), and Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea) in artificial cavities only. Contrary to sand banks, re-use of cavities previously utilized by other bird species was common.
