"One of the ways in which the springs can be stabilized and their future undesirable changes of mechanical properties can be reduced during operation is overload of the springs before their use so called springs prestressing. Prestressing of the tension springs is manufacturing or assembling process used for developing appropriate residual stress in the spring. In this article they have been compared three ways of preloading such as single, multiple and long term (1000 hr) conducted at laboratory temperature. It was determined contraction of the springs produced from unalloyed steel with wire diameter 1 mm, 3.15 mm and 5 mm. It was also determined the change of their stiffness. Further it was also verifi ed theoretical formula for calculating contraction due to prestressing. Whereas the contraction has been signifi cantly infl uenced by the way of the prestressing, stiffness has not been changed due to the way of the prestressing.
