"Within the bounds of the experiment, the simulation of six different start-up processes in reactors treating reject water with high ammonium nitrogen (N-ammon) concentration was performed. Methods varied with applied inoculum, nitrogen loading rate, and the initial concentration of N-ammon in a reactor. It was proved that nitrification during biological treatment of reject water could be initiated even without any inoculation of nitrifying biomass. The efficient nitritation was in this case achieved significantly faster than nitratation. The inoculation with common activated sludge rapidly shortened the start-up process of both nitrification steps in the reactor with high initial N-ammon concentration. Immediate start-up of nitrification process with nitrates as a dominant product was achieved even with relatively high nitrogen loading rate in case of inoculation with common activated sludge.
