"Growing of grasses for energy use is one of the possibilities how to use arable land surplus and it also helps to increase a share of renewable energy sources. Four grass species were compared - Festuca arundinacea, Festulolium (Festuca arundinacea x Lolium multiflorum), Bromus marginatus and Bromus inermis under four treatments - one cut at the end of growing season without fertilisation, a delayed harvest in spring without fertilisation, two cuts without fertilisation and two cuts with fertilisation (100 kg N ha-1). Evaluated parameter was calorific value. The calorific value in grass biomass ranged from 17,85 kJ.g-1 in F. arundinacea to 18,13 kJ.g-1 in B. inermis. Significantly higher calorific value was found in the biomass from the first cut in the fertilised treatment and in the biomass from the spring harvest (P=0,0004).
