"The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of long-term sewage sludge application on plant Cu uptake and crop yields. Field experiments have been conducted since 1996 on five sites with different soil and climate characteristics. In these experiments potatoes, winter wheat and spring barley have been grown in a three-year crop rotation. Two different application rates of sludge were compared to NPK and NPK+heavy metals mixture (inorganic salts) treatments. Sludge as well as the heavy metals in the inorganic salts were applied only under potatoes. We found a slightly higher uptake of Cu by plants treated with sewage sludge compared to NPK treatment. Crops planted on sewage sludge treated plots showed comparable yields only in potatoes. Wheat andbarley, grown in the second and third year after sludge application, showed higher yields at NPK treated plots.
