"The aim of the present work was the enumeration and isolation of bifidobacteria in fermented milk products, other food, lyophilised preparates, and food supplements. The products tested were purchased on Europe market. The product tested could be dividedinto three groups: 1) Products with high concentration of bifidobacteria (> 106/g; lyophilised powders, some fermented milk products). 2) Products with variable or low occurrence of bifidobacteria (some fermented milk products, butter). 3) Products whic h claimed the presence of bifidobacteria but no bifidobacteria were found (some food supplements). Eight isolates of bifidobacteria from fermented milk products were characterised and identified to the species level. Seven strains out of them were identified as Bifidobacterium animalis.
