"Active infrared thermography can be regarded as a well-established non-destructive method today. This method uses visualization of surface temperature field of test object, which has been subjected to heating by an external heat source, for detecting defects. If surface heating in combination with present-day thermal imagers using matrix FPA detectors is used, this method appears to be useful even for the inspection of large-area aircraft skin panels, whether they are made of composite materials or light metal alloys. The proper method of heating is, besides the properties of the infrared imager, the most important factor influencing the method sensitivity and reliability. There is one promising method of high homogeneity and intensity surface heating that can be used - the use of electric resistance heating element in the form of thin film, which can heat the skin surface and enable the use of both transmission and reflection technique. Practical tests of the method were carried out in the field of detection of subsurface defects located in the relatively thick-walled carbon/epoxy composite sample and detection of simulated corrosion loss of light metal alloy plate.
