"In the Czech Republic the major part of the potatoes is grown by conventional technology. Unfortunately, organic potato growing technology, which requires special care in production of quality organic potatoes, is so far little extended. Even if individual growing steps are essentially the same as in conventional technology, protection of potatoes without chemical treatments and fertilization without artificial fertilizers has to be balanced by choosing appropriate measures, creating suitable environment for the growth and development of plants. The aim of economic analysis was to compare technology of potato growing in 2010 - 2012 years in terms of cost and profitability of production. In organic farming 4 farms were evaluated, in conventional system of potato growing 8 chosen potato producers were involved in the evaluation. Average yield of potatoes was lower in organic farming by 46,3 % (16,3 t/ha) in comparison with conventional technology. Quite the opposite situation was recorded for average realization price of potatoes \u2013 in organic farming 0,28 EUR/kg and in conventional technology only 0,13 EUR/kg. From cost items the biggest difference in favour of organic farming was found in costs of fertilizers and chemical protection of potatoes (lower by 650 EUR/ha). Total costs per hectare of potatoes were higher in conventional technology (3 464 EUR), in organic farming they were lower by 7 % (3 214 EUR); total costs per kilo of potatoes were higher in organic farming (0,20 EUR/kg) whereas in conventional technology they were lower by 40 % (0,12 EUR/kg). Both technology of potato growing reported positive rate of profitability in monitoring period, but it is necessary to add, that potato growing area in organic farming was about 1 ha in comparison with 140 ha in chosen potato producers applying conventional potato growing technology." . .
