Some methods involve time-consuming re-inoculation of agar slants cultures; moreover, they are prone to contamination or infestation by mites. Other methods, such as freeze-drying or cryopreservation, are dependent on a relatively sophisticated procedures or equipment. The aim of this work is to highlight the simple, unassuming and quite successful method of storing fungal isolates using silica gel. The method was described in 1962 and in many laboratories around the world was considered the standard method of storing of spore-forming fungi. The advantage of this method is its temporal, spatial and financial modesty. The method is not susceptible to power failures, cultures are repeatedly accessed, and there is no possibility of infestation by mites. Micromycetes are very viable for about 5 years (75-100 %), but also cultures preserved on silica gel for 25 years were possible to revive, albeit with a lower success rate (<70 %). I used this method for testing of storage of 70 isolates including common soil micromycetes in soil of cattle overwintering area (Aspergillus, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Fusarium, Mortierella, etc.).
