Pasture soils can be either net source or sink of methane. In a field experiment on the cattle overwintering area, methane emissions were measured using 24 chambers during 81 days in the period from April to June. Relatively large emissions, reaching mean value of 13.11 mg CH4-C m-2h-1, were found during the experimental period. Average cummulative methane emissions were 31.2 kg CH4-C ha-1. At the end of experiment, however, also negative fluxes were sometimes determined, suggesting methane oxidation in the soil. In laboratory experiment the rate of methane oxidation in individual layers of the soil profile up to 16 cm depth were determined. The highest rate of methane oxidation, about 7 ng CH4-C g-1h-1, was found in a depth of about 5 cm. In the soil layer 2-8 cm, the methane oxidation rate was about 3 times higher than in the soil layer of 14-16 cm.
