"Acid sulphate (AS) soils generate after aeration, due to e.g. cultivation for agricultural use, a number of problems, including sulphuric acid formation. The acidity of drainage waters and soils causes chronic toxicity and has been responsible for massive fish kills, decreases in soil fertility, and negative effects on plant growth. In some boreal AS soils, large stocks of either organic C and N were confirmed in subsoils. We found that deeper horizons of the AS soil located in Helsinki area contain rich microbial communities, characterized by high respiration and biomass.
