"There are many independent reports about occurrence of microflora in deep subsurface layers more than 50-100 m below soil surface in habitats such as petroleum, coal or lignite layer, basalt or granite rocks, deep subsurface aquifers, including deep subsurface layers below terrestrial ecosystems and sea bottom. These reports were summarized by several comprehensive reviews, which concluded that microorganisms are common inhabitants of deep subsurface layers and may take place in many important geological processes. Despite numerous reports of occurrence of deep subsurface microflora little is known about source of this microflora pattern of its occurrence and role in subsurface ecosystem. Their potential role in geological processes is highly discussed topic.
