"Distribution of picocyanobacteria (PICO) and cyanophages (CPH) were studied in mesotrophic and mesoeutrophic Sheksna and Rybinsk reservoirs of Volga-Baltic Waterway system (21 sampling stations between 59 to 60 degree North and 37 to 38 degree East, depths from 1.3 to 9 m, surface water temperature 20.5 to 22.7 degree C). The share of PICO in phytoplankton biomass and production decreased along with the increase the trophy. Daily total phytoplankton production varied from 100 to 726 carbon per cubic m. The abundance of CPH as well as infection and virus-induced mortality of PICO, in the opposite, increased (doubled). Mortality of PICO from viral lysis increased up to 52% of their daily production in the stations where phytoplankton blooms developed and at the parts affected by communal pollution." .
