"Content of active forms of N, its changes and short-term production of N2O were investigated as parameters that reflect availability of N in soil. Investigation was performed in soils at different locations of cattle overwintering area and in three locations of orchards. Hypothesis were tested that soils with high availability of N contains high proportion of mineral N while in soils limited by N microbial biomass N is prevailing form of active N. Hypothesis was further tested that soil with higher availability of N not only produces higher amount of N2O, but it also produce more N2O after N input. Soils differed especially in total content of active N while differences in relative proportions were less clear. Differences were in agreement with presumed differences in inputs and utilization of N under contrasting vegetation.
