"Ergosterol is one of the most abundant sterol held in the cell membranes of filamentous fungi and yeasts. Soil ergosterol concentration is therefore usually used to estimate the fungal biomass in soil. The microwave assisted extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy has been used for estimate of content of ergosterol in soil samples of non-recultivated post-mining heaps in different state of primary succession. Content of ergosterol in soil samples increased with age of heaps, higher content of ergosterol was found in the upper soil layer (0-5 cm) than in the lower layer (10-15 cm). Content of ergosterol was positively correlated with the content of other fungal biomarkers, i.e. phospholipid fatty acid 18:2w6,9 (biomarker of total fungal biomass (r=0,7383, p<0,001) and fatty acid 16:1w5 (biomarker of endomycorrhizal fungi) (r=0,6211, p=0,001).
