"The effect of food supply on gonadal development of females and males of barb (Barbus barbus L.) was examined monitoring of gonads, its developmental stages respectively, from out off spawning season until the first reproduction activity. Barbs were devided into three groups feeding at different food quality levels expressed as proportion of natural and artificial food. Therefore, gonadosomatic index (GSI) was calculated and histological preparations were made from gonadal tissue at the beginning and end of study. The developmental stage IV was achieved in 34 % of females fed on the highest ration of natural food (40%) and were found almost able to ovulate. In the second group, developmental stage IV was similarly found in 32 % of females fed on 22% of natural food, but no female ready to ovulate was reported.
