"Anthropogenic activities lead to environmental contamination with foreign substances, which subsequently get into the food web. Research of contamination assessment of running waters with selected heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, As) and persistent organochlorine pollutants (PCB indicator congeners - IUPAC numbers 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180; hexachlorobenzene; -, -, -isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane, DDT and its degradation products DDE and DDD) was carried out in the Czech Republic during 2001-2005. Loading of selected localities on Elbe, Vltava, Blanice, Skalice and Tich\u00E1 Orlice rivers and on Skalka and Orlik reservoirs was assessed by means of analyses of tissues of indicator fish species. Mercury can be unequivocaly considered the most serious contaminant of the aquatic environment of the Czech Republic, from all the extraneous substances studied.
