Nitrite, a primary concern in fish hatchery with water reuse system, can accumulate to dangerous concentrations if biological filtration is compromised. The aim of this study was to sum up results of laboratory experiments carried out on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Only 3-h exposure to 36 mg.l-1 NO2- in chloride poor water (10 mg.l-1) cause elevation of methaemoglobin (metHb) level to 10 %, whereas the content of metHb in fish exposed to the same concentration of nitrite in chloride enriched water (71 mg.l-1) and control fish did not exceed 3 %. The blood metHb content increased to 79 % and 56 % mortality occurred in group 1 after 24-h exposure under the same condition, no mortality and lower metHb content (34 %) occurred in group 2. No changes appeared in control fish.
