"Five species of the crayfish occur in open waters of the Czech Republic. The noble crayfish Astacus astacus and the stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium are two native species occuring in the Czech Republic. The noble crayfish is the most abundant species occuring in brooks, small rivers and ponds. The stone crayfish is highly endangered in the Czech Republik and occurs probably only in the a small M\u00EDza brook in the K\u0159ivokl\u00E1t protected area. The narrow clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus (an European species alien in the Czech Republic) occurs mainly in quarry pits in Southern and Eastern Bohemia. Threats to both autochtonous species and also to narrow clawed crayfish are habitat dectruction such as river regulations, and crayfish plague Aphanomyces astaci, spread by introduced American crayfish. The occurrence of North American signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus is restricted to several sites only.
