"The relationships between action vs. state orientation (Kuhl, 1993, 1984; Kuhl & Beckmann, 1994) on one hand, and self-concept of ability, social consequences anxiety, attributional style, and assigment of importance to positive and negative life ev ents on the other hand were tested in 68 sophomers at the University of South Bohemia, School of Education. Futhermore, the assumptions that action-oriented students make more profitable use of their intellectual abilities was also tested. Results showedthat action orientation was positively related to self concept of ability and negatively related to evaluation anxiety. The assigment of importance to negative life events was negatively related to action orientation following failure (AOF), but not rel ated to action orientation in prospective planning (AOP). This is explained by the fact that AOF relates to postactional thoughts, whereas AOP relates to predecisional thoughts.
