"Two populations of Gentiana pannonica with unclear status from the Giant Mts (Krkono\u0161e in Czech / Karkonosze in Polish) were included to molecular analyses of population structure together with 11 populations from the Eastern Alps (distribution centre of the species) and 7 populations from the Bohemian Forest (northern margin of distribution range). No plastid DNA polymorphisms were found. The AFLP data revealed grouping of populations at the regional level. The majority of samples from the Giant Mts were grouped together being separated from the other samples from the Alps and the Bohemian Forest. However, differentiation at the regional level was low (10.3 %). The pattern at the inter and intrapopulational levels was similar in all three analyzed regions (within-population variation was high). Genetic variation was higher for the alpine populations than for the Bohemian Forest populations, but variation of the population from the Giant Mts was comparable to the native regions. The results indicate the possibility of a large distribution of G. pannonica in the unglaciated areas of Central Europe (from the Alps to the Giant Mts), irrespective of altitude, during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. Our results do not confirm that G. pannonica was introduced in the Giant Mts. On the other hand, we have no clear evidence for the native status of the species.
