"During last decades the decline of littoral vegetation was documented on the heavily eutrophic fishponds and lakes. This can be an important problem in case of reserves with numer?ous waterfowls which depend on well developed littoral vegetation. Since 2005 the decline of littoral vegetation dominated by Typha angustifolia was observed in the Domin fishpond (Vrben?sk\u00E9 rybniky NR). A rapid littoral decline was also documented in the adjacent Baiina fishpond, therefore the monitoring of the littoral vegetation started there in 2013, including detailed littoral mapping, monitoring of water, pore water and sediment chemistry and measurement of the redox conditions. Comparing the actual littoral vegetation and historical orthophotomaps the littoral vegetation was reduced into one third of the former area during the last 10 years. Water in the fishpond is eutrophic with low transparency as a result of high fish pressure and phytoplankton expansion. There is a high amount of organic matter accumulated in the fishpond bottom. The loose organic sediments are mostly anaerobic. The decline of the littoral vegetation is caused by: 1) grazing of waterfowls on the young stems and rhizomes, especially by abundant popula?tions of geese, 2) undermining of Typha tufts and breaking apical buds of the rhizomes by carp and 3) anaerobic conditions in the loose organic sediments in the bottom. The combination of these factors weakens the plants, reduces their vegetative reproduction and decreases their regeneration ability. Decaying Typha tufts contribute to the accumulation of organic matter on the fishpond bottom and thus enhance the trophic level of water.
