"Sludge content in filtration beds of seven horizontal flow constructed wetlands varied between 0.1 and 15% or between 1 and 160 g.dm-3. The upper values of 160 g.dm-3 seems to be limiting for further successful sub-surface operation of the system. In comparison with the legal limits for risk elements (Hg, Cd, Mo, Be, As, Co, Pb, Cu, Cr, V, Ni, Zn) according to the Decree 13/1994 the values in the sludge were exceeded only for zinc. However, when concentrations of zinc are calculated in the filtration material including gravel then the zinc concentration is well below the limit. Even traditionally the most problematic elements in wastewater treatment sludges ? mercury, cadmium and lead ? are well below the limits. The content of macronutrients (phosphorus, potassium and calcium) in the sludge was 4.82, 4.54 and 59.7 g.kg-1, respectively.
