"Innovative strategies of heat treatment based on the Q-P principle were applied to 42SiCr steel to investigate the influence of the processing parameters on the final microstructure and properties. In particular, the influence of the cooling rate from austenization temperature of 900\u00B0C to the temperature of 150\u00B0C and the length of subsequent hold at 250\u00B0C were investigated. Due to the variation in applied cooling medium, the cooling rate varied from 4\u00B0C/s in a salt bath to 30\u00B0C/s in cold water. Resulted microstructures were predominately martensitic with 6-11% of retained austenite, however no visible connection between retained austenite volume fraction and mechanical properties was observed. All processing strategies achieved good combinations of ultimate strengths around 2000 MPa and ductility A5mm over 20%. Both tensile strength and ductility seems to be rather insensitive towards cooling rate; however the slowest salt bath cooling resulted in highest yield strengths. The best combination of a high ultimate strength of 1992MPa with relatively good ductility A5mm of 21% and yield strength reaching 1722MPa was obtained for the strategy which combined slowest cooling in a salt bath with 10minutes hold at an annealing temperature of 250\u00B0C. Microstructure characterization was carried out by laser scanning confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and volume fraction of retained austenite was established by X-ray diffraction phase analysis."@en . .
