"Growth pattern of body weight was analyzed in bulls (n=23) and steers (n=24), progeny of sires of charolais, galloway, beef simmental and crossbreeds, with non-linear mixed effects models. There was used Gompertz equation for the growth description with parameters \u2013 asymptote A, inflection point Ti and growth rate K: weight = A*exp(-exp(-K*(x-Ti))). Difference in residual variability between groups of bulls and steers was also tested. Subject \u2013 animal and sire (nested design) were used as random effect; fattening system, castration status, order of day of birth in season and year as fixed effects. Only random effects subject on the A was significant. The asymptote in bulls was 1108.9, in steers 205 lower. Inflection point was 316.3 in bulls, in steers 35.1 lower. There were no significant difference in growth rate K = 0.0032. Residual variability was 41 % higher in bulls. Other fixed effects were not significant."@en . . .
