"Effect of heat treatment and plasma nitriding on the fracture toughness of a widely used superior quality Dievar hot work steel was investigated. The use of higher tempering temperature led to higher fracture toughness without any significant loss in hardness. Plasma nitriding reduced the fracture toughness but if the nitrided region does not contain compound layer or nitrided network, the reduction is not high and the toughness of 200 J/cm2 can easily be achieved. In the case of thick nitrided region containing the compound layers and/or network around the grains, the material became brittle."@en .
