"Denitrifying bacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens and Paracoccus pantotrophus immobilized in polyvinylalcohol matrix (so called Lentikats biocatalyst, LB) are applied for continual removal of nitrates and nitrites from desulphurization wastewaters characterized by high salinity (Cl- up to 35 g/L, SO42- up to 17 g/L, Ca2+ and Mg2+ up to 2 g/L), high N-NOX- (up to 250 mg/L), and high COD (up to 1400 mg/L) a low BOD5 (hundreds mg/L) and limiting phosphorus (< 0,04 mg/L). In spite of inhibition of denitrification achieved denitrification activities were high enough for industrial applications (169 and 450 mg N/hr.kg LB at 35 g/L Cl- + 17 g/L SO42- and 20 g/L Cl- + 10,5 g/L SO42- respectively). Effluent N-NOX- concentrations were <5 mg/L. Nevertheless for long-term maintenance of high denitrification activity continuous dosage of phosphorus is indispensable.
