"This contribution examines the distribution and function of analogical expressions in the natural sciences. The study follows a two-pronged approach: On the one hand, it looks at two different registers of science texts, on the other, it empirically assigns different metaphorical expressions different research domains but also raises the question of a specified use of these expressions. More to the point, metaphor is studied here as the figurative use of verbs of perception against a cognitive-linguistic framework focusing on a source/target domain analysis. For that end, a corpus with texts from a range of natural sciences was queried. The special characteristic of the corpus (called SPACE for Specialized and Popular Academic Corpus of English, see Haase, 2009) is its parallel structure. SPACE is comprised of a set of original texts from the physical and from the biosciences, retrieved from pre-print servers like arxiv and PNAS." . . "13430" . .
