There are not only species diversity indices but indices of functional diversity, too. The Rao coefficient (BOTTA-DUK\u00C1T 2005) is such example. A newly designed method of calculation of Rao coefficient on the basis of classification of species was applied on large data set of relev\u00E9s from forest plant communities in the area of Krkono\u0161e Mts. and their surrounding. The change in diversity during past 50 years as a common trend was revealed (slight increase of both species richness and functional diversity in the herb layer). It point to moderate disturbances of forests. The higher functional diversity was observed in the forest communities of moderate acidophilus man-influenced coniferous and mixtured stands at lower or middle altitudes. Common trends in relations among diversity indices were described: (1) Number of functional groups of species is independent on species richness except for the communities with very low species number. (2) Higher numbers of functional groups of species are limited by a monotone function of Simpson's index. The other (lower) limit exists too. (3) Functional diversity expressed by Rao coefficient raises with species diversity: common ratio Rao/H' is approximately equal to 0.13.
