"The contribution offers examples of serious technological defects in helical welds on older pipes. The authors obtained the input data for determining the influence of large model defects near helical welds on load capacity by static and cyclic pressure test on a DN900 pipe made of St 52.2 steel, loading it to fracture. The fracture occured at a pressure that was 2,5 times higher that the operating pressure, in a long notch. Upon fracture, the load was greater than the yield point and lower than the limit strength of the material. The weaker unfavourable effect of the defetcts is related to the lower level of the normal component of stress near the weld compared with the critical circumferential stress. Repair of the defect by grinding had a favourable effect. The information obtained about the load capacity of the pipe with defects was then compared with an evaluation of the impact of defects using RSTRENG2 method and also with their evaluation by means of fracture mechanics under elastic-plastic conditions. Compared with the results of the tests, the RSTRENG2 method produced a conservative evaluation.
