. . . "Barley varieties are bred mostly on the basis of combination breeding. All current varieties contain at least one gene for specific resistance to the powdery mildew pathogen. However, these genes or their combinations have different both actual and prospective effectiveness. At time of breeding, genetic background of resistance of chosen parental varieties is not mostly known. After crossing these resistance genes segregate in progenies. Tests with chosen isolates of the pathogen (causal agent of powdery mildew) allow to select homozygous progenies with promising resistances and thus to reduce the extent of breeding material. None of the current pathogen individuals is able to overcome all non promising resistances. Therefore, more isolates selected for their specific pathogenicity (virulence), i.e. the ability to induce infection on barley plants with a corresponding resistance gene, must be used for testing. Isolate 4517 was obtained from the aerial pathogen population on 28.05.2009 in the route section Brno-B\u0159eclav and due to its virulence combination it was selected from 300 isolates examined in the given year to store in the pathogen gene bank.
