"Experimental rig enables fast approaching in normal direction and subsequent loading of contact between steel ball (or other material) and glass (sapphire) disc. The concept is based on frame in shape of letter U where mechanisms of initial gap setting, loading components, sample holder and vertical movement support is placed in the middle. The sample is pushed against transparent disc placed on the top of frame. Transparent disc allows microscope observation of contact phenomena with presence of lubricant. The initial gap can be adjusted differential screw; linear piezoelectric transducer was used as a movement and loading drive. Ball sample is place in holder by flange and bolts.
