"This study is focused on the analysis of selected pharmaceuticals from the group of analgesics and sulfonamides in surface and waste water. These compounds are discharged to the sewer systems with human excrements after their administration either unchanged or as various metabolites and conjugates and enter the sewage treatment plants, where they are only partly removed during the cleaning process. Therefore they can be found in the discharged water or in sewage sludge and this way they enter the environment, where they can induce negative effects on organisms in soil and water ecosystems. Liquid chromatography with spectrophotometric or mass spectrometric detection is usually used for the analysis of these compounds. Nevertheless, gas chromatography offers substantially better separation efficiency based on fused silica capillary columns. Mass spectrometric detection with electron ionization enables reliable identification of separated compounds on the base of library searches. The only disadvantage"@en .
