"Potential applications of lignite in non-energetical areas are briefly reviewed, including agrochemistry, biotechnology, sorbent technologies, humic substances production, and microbial transformation. Examples of experimental results from our own research on the South-Moravian lignite are presented \u2013 sorption properties of natural lignite, their improvement by thermal activation, results from laboratory and field tests on lignite effect on growing several plants, potential of the South-Moravian lignitee as a source of humic substances and their properties, particularly sorption. It is shown that lignite should not be viewed as a fuel of rather low quality and combusted in power plants but should be considered as a valuable raw material for chemical industry to make products with applications in broad areas of human life and activities.
