"Total strain controlled tests have been performed on cylindrical specimens of two austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) with aim to assess the influence of alloying nickel on the cyclic plasticity and the fatigue life. The microstructure and their quantities are documented by light microscope - image analysis. After cyclic loading the surface relief was observed using SEM. Cyclic hardening/softening curves, cyclic stress-strain curves, and fatigue life curves were obtained for both ADI with different concentration of nickel. High cyclic plastic response had ADI with 2.75 % Ni than ADI with 0.54 %. Fatigue life curves can be well approximated by the Manson-Coffin and Basquin laws. These curves are shifted to lower lives of ADI with 0.54 % Ni. A result of optical microscopy image analysis of structures (namely average nodule diameter, nodule counts) for both ADI is used to discus the cyclic stress-strain response.
