The machine is used in ArcelorMittal Ostrava plc. for casting of billets with a square section of 115 and 160 mm. This caster can produce small slabs as well. First, trial production of the billets with round section (130 mm) was set on the 1st December 2006. The billets of diameter 130 mm are used for the production of seamless pipes. There is no information that this small section of diameter 130 mm is produced on conventional casters. The modification required, among others, expects to re-design the secondary cooling section. A test bench for the study and optimization of spray cooling at round geometry was built at the Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Laboratory. The paper describes the process of secondary cooling optimization with help of heat transfer measurements and numerical modelling.
