"Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are defined as near-ambient-temperature and pressure-water-treatment processes which involve the generation of highly reactive radicals (especially hydroxyl radicals). The role of AOPs technologies in foundry industry consists in the destruction of organic contaminants from green sand systems during foundry pouring, cooling and shakeout. Laboratory data have shown that when an AOPs is employed in a green sand system, the emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) dropped by 15 to 70 percent. AO treatment also simultaneously improves green compressive strength by 10 to 15 percent.
