"Increase of safety of dams mainly with respect to the failure caused by overtopping is a hot theme of the technical discussions nowadays. One of the optional ways to get a required safety is reconstruction of the existing structures. Theoretical hydromechanics and mathematical modelling are still not able to solve complicated cases of the three-dimensional flow on these structures. A design of significant changes of the existing dam structures is risky and unimaginable without preceding hydraulic researrch using physical models. The august 2002 flood on the Thaya River endangered the existing earth dam of the Znojmo Dam. It almost overtopped. The reconstruction of the spillway block of the Znojmo Dam was designed with the aim to increase the safety of the dam mainly with respect to overtopping. The designed reconstruction enables increase of capacity of the safety spillway including necessary modifications of the stilling basin.
