"The presentation introduces a new design of virtual 3D keyboard [i] that is designed with typing velocity in mind. 3D Keyboard is an application utilizing Microsoft Kinect which enables typing text with moving one of hands in the air. Keyboard consists of seven cubes placed in 3D scene in a cross-like pattern. Letters are typed by entering some sequence of the cubes with one of user's hands. The idea behind the keyboard is inspired by 8pen method of typing, introduced on Android smart phones. 3D Keyboard can be thought as a 3D version of 8pen, which is only two-dimensional. Recently, three dimensional computer interfaces has been emerging at a rapid rate. This is caused mainly by huge technological advances in the area of hardware capable of capturing 3D space. This hardware is used for various purposes; such as controlling humanoid robots, 3D scene recognition or motion capture to name a few. A lot of effort is made to introduce an interface for touch-less communication with a computer that would not require physical mouse or keyboard. As mouse movements and clicks can be easily simulated using hand gestures, typing has turned out to be a big challenge, as it requires a higher level of accuracy. One approach is to reproduce the layout of traditional flat keyboard in virtual space in front of user screen. User can type by pressing virtual keys on the keyboard by touching them with her finger. However, problem with such approach is low typing velocity, which is an issue that 3D Keyboard is trying to address. Typing velocity tests comparing different approaches are part of this work."@en .
