"The aim of this work is a study of the microstructure transformations with the residual stress formation that is induced by rolling contact friction and wear in the rail - wheel system. Several small rail-surface samples, we term them as the ?chips?, were chosen for an analyses of the surface changes in the rail - wheel contact. A multitude of different experiments were carried out in order to analyse the microstructure changes at the surface and the near - surface region of the samples and, thus, to contribute to the understanding of the complex rail - wheel rolling contact system. Optical and scanning electron microscope have revealed the white etching layers on the rail segments, i.e. on the cross - section of the ?chips?. At low magnification, the WEL shows its characteristic localy-homogeneous structure of heterogeneous layers, as reported previously.
