The nature of the white layer formed on the running surface of a railway line has been investigated using light microscopy, X-ray diffraction and mainly, transmission electron microscopy. The obtained results indicate that the white layer is of an apparently fully bcc-lattice with features of nano-structure and shows that wear surface contains carbon in solution and is thus not substantially decarburised during service. The obtained results were discussed in relation to both the deformation mechanism at the wear surface and the temperatures likely to be reached at the wheel-rail contact when the layer is formed."@en .
