"The aim of this work was to prepare and characterize hydrogels based on modified glucomannan for potential use for plant nutrition and soil moisture regulation. The starting material was glucomannan, which is a natural polysaccharide composed of repeating glucose and mannose units in a specific molar ratio. Glucomannan is industrially obtained from the plant Amorphophallus konjac, which is mainly grown in the southeastern part of Asia. Glucomannan was cross-linked, which was created by a three-dimensional network. As crosslinking agents were used trisodium trimetaphosphate, pentasodium tripolyphosphate or ethanol. Physicochemical properties were studied at the prepared glucomannan hydrogels, such as swelling in water and saturated solutions of (NH4)2SO4 and urea, the rate of swelling and drying, the solubility temperature dependence and the influence of number of swelling cycles on the water capacity of swollen hydrogel. The nutrient content in the hydrogel swollen in saturated solutions of (NH4) 2SO4 and urea was also studied, as well as release rate of nutrients into the aqueous environment."@en .
