Determination is based on the reaction of formaldehyde with ammonia, when urotropine (hexamine) is formed. Optimum conditions are: sample + 0.02 mol.L-1 NH4Cl, pH 10 (adjusted by KOH solution), analysis day after using capillary isotachophoresis. The optimal isotachophoretic electrolyte system comprised 0.01 mol.L-1 KOH + 0.02 mol.L-1 acetic acid + 0.1% hydroxyethylcellulose (pH 4.75) as the leading electrolyte and 0.01 mol.L-1 acetic acid as the terminator. The calibration / detection characteristics are as follows: linearity over the concentration range of 90-600 mg.L-1 formaldehyde, limit of detection ca. 30 mg.L-1, limit of quantification of ca. 90 mg.L-1 formaldehyde. The procedure is suitable for samples containing higher amount of formaldehyde, and after proof, it is possible to use it for analysis of samples where other methods fail or a separation from interferences is necessary."@en .
